From August 1999 to June 30, 2018 when he retired, Stephen Bayer was the Senior Vice-President and Chief Program Officer at the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. In that capacity he provided advice and counsel to staff and lay leadership related to fund development, human resources, lay leadership development and strategic direction for the agency as well as supervising the program area of Federation. Stephen was the Associate Executive Director of the Jewish Federation from 1993 – 1999.
Prior to joining the staff of the Federation, he served on the staff of the Jewish Community Centers Association from 1977 – 1993 in New York City. He was a board member and served on a variety of committees and task forces associated with the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America (from 1998-2010) and currently is a member of the JCCA Scholarship Committee. He was the Director of Adult and Senior Adult Services at the Pittsburgh Jewish Community Center from 1972 – 1977.
He has served on the boards of several local community non-profits. Stephen and his wife Beth Schiro are supporters of a number of non-profits in the local Hartford area with a special focus on social services, legal aid, accessible housing, education and culture.
He is a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and has advanced degrees in International Affairs and Political Science from George Washington University and the University of Pittsburgh. He is originally from McKeesport, Pennsylvania.
Stephen and his wife, Beth Schiro, live in West Hartford with their daughter Julia and son James.
